What Are the Elements of Landscape Photography?

 Every image is made up of certain elements that collectively constitute the character of the image. Likewise, when we speak of landscape photography there are certain elements that underline the characteristics of the image. Let us discuss them. 

Lens

When it comes to clicking landscape photos, using an ultra wide lens is the standard practice. The idea is to capture as much of the scene as possible. However, at times using telephoto lens will also do. 

Composition 

Following the rule of third is the key. It means, the image is segregated into nine square grids while the focal points are placed on and along the gridlines before pressing the shutter. 

Interest and focal points

Placing a subject, like a person or an object in the foreground will add focal point, thereby adding a sense of scaling to the landscape photos.

The light

There are a few landscape photographers who would never shoot during the day. They would prefer dawn and dusk to shoot images so that they can have the right light that will strike the subject of the image. 

The Depth of the Field

When an SLR or a digital SLR is used the professional clicking landscape photography would combine a slow shutter speed using a small aperture to ensure that the image has a razor sharp focus up to the very edges. 

Exposure

As sky is usually brighter than the ground (excepting the water bodies) the exposure has to be adjusted accordingly. Using a graduated filter will help to uniformly distribute that brightness. 

Sky 

In most landscape shots, either the sky or the foreground will play the dominating role. If the sky is not that dramatic, the photographers will place it in the upper third. On the other hand, if the sky is colourful and dramatic the professionals will push the horizon in the lower third.
